Picture this: You’re standing in your backyard in St. Louis, maybe tending to the grill or just enjoying a rare afternoon without Missouri humidity, when your neighbor, let’s call him "helpful Herb", leans over the fence. Herb’s a great guy. He makes a mean potato salad and once let you borrow his leaf blower. But then, he starts talking about Medicare.
"Oh, don't worry about it," Herb says with the confidence of a man who just won a game of cornhole. "Medicare is totally free, it covers everything, and once you’re in, you’re in for life. Plus, my plan is the best, so you should just get that one."
Bless Herb’s heart. He means well, truly. But when it comes to insurance, Herb is about as accurate as a weather forecast in April. Navigating the Medicare labyrinth can feel like trying to find the best BBQ joint in Kansas City, everyone has an opinion, but not all of them suit your specific taste (or budget).
At Allraya, we’ve heard these tall tales more times than we’ve seen a "Let's Go Blues!" bumper sticker. We’re here to be your guiding star in the insurance galaxy. So, let’s grab a figurative cup of coffee (or a real one, we aren't judging) and debunk the five biggest lies your well-meaning neighbor told you.
Lie #1: “Medicare is 100% Free!”
We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but unless you’ve found a secret money tree in Forest Park, Medicare isn't exactly "free." This is perhaps the most common myth floating around the neighborhood potluck.
Yes, Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) is premium-free for most people because you’ve spent your working life paying into it via taxes. But then there’s Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance). Part B usually carries a monthly premium that is typically deducted from your Social Security check. If you aren't drawing Social Security yet, you’ll get a bill in the mail that looks suspiciously like every other bill you’d rather not pay.
Beyond the premiums, there are deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. Original Medicare usually only covers about 80% of your outpatient costs. That remaining 20%? That’s on you, dear reader. Without a proper safety net, like medigap plans Missouri residents often use to fill those holes, those costs can stack up faster than empty plates at a fish fry.
The Fix: Don’t assume your bank account is safe just because you have a red, white, and blue card. Talk to a local expert at Allraya to see how you can manage these costs effectively.
Lie #2: “Don't Sweat It, They’ll Sign You Up Automatically.”
Herb told you that when the clock strikes midnight on your 65th birthday, the government will automatically enroll you in everything you need. While that sounds like a lovely birthday gift, it’s only true if you are already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits.
If you’re still working or have delayed your Social Security benefits, the government isn't going to come knocking on your door with enrollment forms. You actually have a 7-month Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): three months before you turn 65, your birth month, and three months after.
If you miss this window, you might face late enrollment penalties that stick with you for the rest of your life. Imagine paying a "late fee" on your insurance every single month just because you listened to Herb. No thank you!
The Fix: Mark your calendar. If you aren't on Social Security yet, you need to be proactive. Not sure when to start? Check out our Medicare Guide for a roadmap that won't lead you into a ditch.
Lie #3: “It Covers Everything, Even My Fancy New Dentures!”
If we had a nickel for every time someone thought Medicare covered routine dental, vision, or hearing, we’d probably buy the Cardinals. (Okay, maybe just a very nice luxury box).
Original Medicare is fantastic for the big stuff, hospital stays, doctor visits, surgeries, but it has some glaring holes. Generally speaking, it does not cover:
- Routine dental exams or cleanings.
- Eye exams for glasses or contacts.
- Hearing aids.
- Long-term care (nursing homes).
This is where many people start looking into medicare advantage plans Missouri. These plans, often called Part C, are offered by private companies and frequently include those "extras" Herb forgot to mention, like dental and vision coverage.
The Fix: Think about your lifestyle. Do you wear glasses? Do you like having teeth? If so, you’ll want to look into Medicare Advantage or supplemental coverage.

Lie #4: “Once You Choose a Plan, You’re Stuck With It Forever.”
Herb makes it sound like choosing a Medicare plan is a lifelong commitment, like a tattoo or a blood oath. "Choose wisely," he warns, "because you're locked in!"
Fear not! Medicare is surprisingly flexible. Every year, there is the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) from October 15 to December 7. During this time, you can switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, change your drug coverage, or move between different medicare advantage plans Missouri has to offer.
There’s also the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31) if you realize your January resolution was to find a better plan. Life changes, your health might change, your doctors might leave a network, or a new plan might hit the market with better benefits. You aren't stuck in a bad relationship with your insurance.
The Fix: Treat your Medicare plan like your car, it needs an annual tune-up. Even if you love your current plan, it’s worth a quick chat with Nathan Toal or one of our agents to make sure it’s still the best deal for you.
Lie #5: “My Plan is the Best, So It’ll Be the Best for You!”
This is the biggest "neighbor lie" of them all. Herb loves his plan. It covers his specific medications, his doctor at Missouri Baptist is in-network, and he loves the silver sneakers benefit. But here’s the thing: You aren't Herb. (Thankfully, you probably have better taste in lawn ornaments).
Medicare is not "one size fits all." It’s more like a tailored suit. Your plan needs to account for:
- Your specific medications: Different plans have different "formularies" (lists of covered drugs).
- Your doctors: You want to make sure your preferred specialists are in-network.
- Your budget: Some people prefer a $0 premium plan with copays, while others prefer a higher premium with a medigap plans Missouri setup that covers almost everything upfront.
- Your travel habits: Do you stay in St. Louis year-round, or are you a "snowbird" heading to Florida the moment the first snowflake hits the Ground Round?
Choosing a plan just because your neighbor likes it is like buying a pair of shoes in Herb's size. They might be great shoes, but your feet are going to hurt.
The Fix: Get a personalized analysis. At Allraya, we look at your doctors and your prescriptions to find the "Goldilocks" plan that is just right for you.
